Operational Efficiency & Glaucoma Workflow Optimization

Overview

Overview

At one of Georgia’s busiest glaucoma practices, operational efficiency directly impacts both patient outcomes and clinic performance.

Eye Consultants of Savannah performs approximately 30 visual field tests per day, with nearly 45% of all daily patients requiring visual field testing. With four providers, including three glaucoma specialists, maintaining efficient clinic flow while ensuring repeatable visual field results had become critical to daily operations.

For COO Anapa Nophlin, the focus was not only on improving workflow efficiency but also on addressing patient experience factors that contribute to noncompliance and loss to follow-up.

After implementing Inspire®, Eye Consultants of Savannah redesigned its visual field workflow around comfort, flexibility, and throughput. The result was:

  • Fewer retests
  • Greater technician efficiency
  • Stronger clinical confidence
  • Improved patient satisfaction

01 The Challenge

01 The Challenge

Traditional visual field testing introduced several operational and patient-related challenges for the clinic. The team identified three major contributors to patient noncompliance and loss to follow-up:

  • Financial barriers
  • Transportation limitations
  • Poor patient experience with traditional visual field testing

Patients often found bowl perimeter systems uncomfortable and difficult to complete, particularly in a busy clinic environment. The clinic also faced workflow limitations common to high-volume glaucoma practices:

  • Exam rooms occupied during lengthy testing sessions
  • Frequent retesting due to unreliable results
  • Technician inefficiencies
  • Disruptions caused by patient movement and environmental distractions
  • Pressure on provider schedules and patient throughput

As Nophlin explains, “We wanted to try to make a better environment, make the testing more comfortable for the patient.”

The team initially kept visual field testing inside standard exam rooms, but quickly recognized the operational impact this created.

“We needed those minutes. That 10 minutes was important to us.”

In a clinic performing approximately 30 visual field tests per day, even small inefficiencies added up quickly.

“Minutes mean money.”

02 The Solution

02 The Solution

Eye Consultants of Savannah implemented Inspire® and redesigned its testing workflow to center on a dedicated visual field testing environment.

Rather than conducting testing inside exam rooms, the clinic created a separate visual field suite equipped with reclining “big comfy chairs,” allowing patients to complete testing in a more relaxed setting.

Patients no longer needed to sit upright with their head fixed into a large tabletop perimeter device. Instead, Inspire® provided a more comfortable and flexible testing experience using a lightweight headset design.

The clinic also found that Inspire® minimized issues caused by patient movement during testing. Because the headset moves naturally with the patient, distractions were less likely to compromise results.

03 Operational Impact

Improved Technician Efficiency

Inspire improved staffing efficiency and patient throughput by enabling a more streamlined visual field testing workflow.

Faster Clinic Flow

Moving visual field testing into a dedicated testing suite helped free up exam rooms and streamline patient movement throughout the clinic. As workflow efficiency improved, the clinic was able to support increasing visual field testing volumes across both exams completed and patients tested.

Reduced Retesting and Clinical Confidence

According to the physicians at Eye Consultants of Savannah, Inspire improved both test reliability and confidence in clinical decision-making.

Technicians spent less time repeating exams, while physicians reported greater confidence in the quality of the captured data. Doctors consistently reported receiving better visual field results, helping them make more informed glaucoma management decisions. The combination of improved patient experience and operational efficiency ultimately supported stronger clinical performance across the practice.

“That gives our doctors an opportunity to have the results they need to make good clinical decisions for our patients.”

Operational and Financial Impact

As Eye Consultants of Savannah increased testing throughput and streamlined workflow operations, the practice also expanded reimbursement opportunities tied to visual field testing volume.

Improved Patient Experience

Patients responded positively to the redesigned workflow and comfort-focused testing experience.

The ability to recline comfortably during testing reduced stress and improved cooperation, helping support stronger compliance and better overall experiences.

“We created this environment where each patient has a little room, they have a lounger, they sit in their recliner.”

04 Executive Advantage

For Eye Consultants of Savannah, Inspire became more than a new testing platform. It became a workflow optimization strategy for delivering efficient, high-quality glaucoma care at scale.

By aligning patient comfort with operational efficiency, the clinic improved both the patient experience and practice performance simultaneously.

In high-volume glaucoma care, every minute matters.
