The Background

The Background

The Background

AEG Vision is a rapidly growing network of optometric practices that deliver full-scope optometry services. AEG’s operational support team handles administrative, regulatory, and compliance matters, freeing doctors to focus on providing exceptional patient care. When a new group or practice joins the network, AEG Vision maintains the Regional/Local Brand, Doctors, OD Staff, Opticians, and Operational Model. They carefully integrate each practice, and make significant investments in Technology, Equipment, Materials, Product Supply Chain, Marketing, and Administration programs.

It’s a complex operation, with many moving parts. “We manage over 430 practices, almost 850 doctors,” explains Dr. Ben Chudner, AEG Vision’s Chief Medical Officer. Making decisions for and about diverse practices, with diverse needs, means careful analysis before every decision, including acquiring vision care technology.

We’re a private equity-backed group,” Chudner explains. “We want to acquire new practices. So, we have to build a business case when we make a decision. We were looking for options, to help meet the needs of our patients and our doctors, while being financially responsible for the organization.” Some of the practices AEG Vision acquires have been operating for decades, with well-used equipment that may be out-of-date or on its last legs. AEG’s commitment to providing network doctors, staff, and patients with a world-class diagnostic experience means making the right decision about new equipment and technology.

01 The Challenge

01 The Challenge

Some of the practices AEG Vision has acquired have been operating for decades, with well-used equipment that may be out-of-date or on its last legs. To uphold their commitment to delivering a world-class diagnostic experience for network doctors, staff, and patients, AEG Vision faced a critical decision of when and how to invest in new equipment and technology, balancing operational needs with innovation.

02 The Solution

02 The Solution

AEG Vision’s need was clear: state-of-the-art, reliable, flexible, portable vision care technology supported by top-notch service. Enter RadiusXR. AEG Vision entered into a collaboration with RadiusXR, with a plan to roll out the RadiusXR platform network wide. This includes the growing suite of Radius modalities, and the patient education portal, EYEVIA.

Quality Performance

It had to be something that obviously is clinically effective and efficient, something that our patients would appreciate,” explains Dr. Eliot Grossman, AEG Vision’s COO. “There are a lot of options out there, but at the end of the day, it really is about what’s going to be the best clinical solution to deliver the best outcome for our patients. Something that our doctors and technicians would like to use. And something that would be financially viable for us to put in a large number of locations.”

Reliability

Chudner says that reliability is a major consideration: “Our practices are extremely busy, so having a device go down can have significant financial implications and can also affect patient care. We don’t want patients to have to come back three weeks later, whenever the device is fixed.” Says Grossman, “It’s about outcomes, right? It’s about the ability to do a visual field test in a way that gives you an outstanding clinical result.”

Flexibility, Comfort, and Ease of Use

We’re hearing from patients that it’s a much easier test for them to take [especially] our elderly patients,” Grossman continues. “The flexibility of not having to put your chin in a cup, being able to sit more comfortably. Patients appreciate the ease of doing a visual field test with a headset versus using the traditional method.”

The advantages to AEG Vision’s administrative and operational support are substantial. “The ability to actually see what’s going on in a real-world level, understand what tests are being done, how often, and on whom — this enables effective follow up and the right conversations with doctors, because at the end of the day, this is all about outcomes,” Grossman explains.

Service

Service was another thing that we looked at, to make sure that the devices not only worked, but will keep working,” Chudner affirms. “We must know we have a trusted partner that will be there and be responsive when we need it.”

Portability

The varied constraints of the diverse practices in the network is another critical consideration. And that’s where portability becomes an essential value. Says Chudner, “Having a portable device, that doesn’t necessarily have to be tied to one specific room — [a test] could be done in an office, it could be done in the waiting room, if we had to do that. It offers our doctors some flexibility to run tests immediately, where otherwise it may have been necessary to have a patient come back, which isn’t always best for patient care.”

Data-Driven Dashboard Showing Financial ROI

Chudner says that RadiusXR’s data dashboard has allowed AEG Vision to understand and empower the entire network of doctors and their teams. “The data dashboard has been a huge win for us. We’re a very data-driven organization. We needed to see the doctors using it, what tests they were administering, and our expected reimbursement for those tests. All those things were easily found in the data dashboard. So, we could make a case for a return on investment on a device.”

To meet the specific needs of AEG Vision, the RadiusXR team customized the data dashboard for even better, network-centric results. “We had requested changes to the dashboard,” Chudner explains, “and the team was extremely responsive, able to tailor to exactly what we needed. It was pretty good at first, but it’s gotten even better. We don’t want to work with vendors. We want to work with partners. That data dashboard and the work that was put into it showed us that this was more than just a vendor who wanted to place a device. This was a partner who was going to help us meet our goals. That’s extremely important to us.”

03 Results

RadiusXR has been a tremendous success for AEG Vision and its network.

We evaluated more than one device before deciding who to partner with,” Chudner explains. “There were a lot of factors we looked at, and financial is certainly one of them. But it also has to be clinically relevant.”

Grossman especially appreciates that the RadiusXR platform is continually updating and improving. “It’s the ability to have a great product right now, but also understanding that the product will continue to evolve while receiving continuous over-the-air updates at speeds unmatched in the eyecare world.”

Patients like it, the doctors like it, the associates like it,” Grossman raves. “That’s how you succeed — you focus on the primary goal, which is to create great patient outcomes, and support your doctors and technicians in delivering that.”
